George Richardson's early career was spent as a draughtsman in the office of Robert and James Adam, and indeed he was a fine interior designer in the Adam style, providing a number of drawings for Kedleston Hall in the late 1760s. In the photograph, clear glass illuminates not Richardson's interior, but the soulless one created by Joseph Goddard (see St Andrew's, Countesthorpe) in 1874. He replaced the original ceiling, lowered the floor, and installed heavy, off-the-peg pews - a thoroughly bad job by a talented architect.
