In 1823 Scarborough was a maritime centre, and home to no fewer than 59 master mariners and 56 registered ship owners. However, it was also one of the earliest seaside resorts in the country. When the first train arrived here in July 1845, it brought with it huge numbers of day-trippers. Here, a family group takes the opportunity to admire the view over the Spa Cliff.
