More about this scene
A sizeable crowd gathers to watch a Punch and Judy show. These one-man shows, which reached the height of their popularity in Victorian times, were based on the character of Pulcinella, the impudent hunchback from the Commedia dell'Arte, which originated in 16th-century Italy.
