At Domesday, the manor was held by the Abbot of St Benedict`s, Ramsey, and the parish had a population of about 150.

The Vicar of St Peter and St Paul's Church, James Ramsay, played a major part in ensuring the abolition of slavery. He died in 1789.
However, the Romsey-based brewery, which was leased to Thomas Strong in 1858, was acquired by Whitbread in 1969 and brewing finally ceased in 1981.
St Peter's church was built in the 1830s to replace the old church at Hamsey, which was isolated on a former island in the Ouse meadows.
