Cheriton had two National Schools; one for boys was built in 1869 for 100 pupils, and the other school, for 150 girls and infants, was built in 1887.
Cheriton's original parish church is of considerable antiquity – it contains some stonework dating from the Norman conquest.
They would have to wait a year before a motor bus service between Hythe and Cheriton was on the road.

In 1644 the Royalists set the town alight following the nearby Battle of Cheriton. In 1689 most of the town was again burned to the ground when another fire swept through it.
In 1975, a stone was erected marking the site of the Civil War battle of Cheriton that lies to the east of the village – the battle took place in 1644.
