Merrion House School

A Memory of Sedlescombe.

I was interested to read the comments on Merrion House. I was a pupil between 1959-1963.
Life even in those days was somewhat spartan, but I do not remember swimming in the pool. The tuck shop was always a special occasion, being open just once a week.
Mrs Brummell-Hicks unfortunately died my first year and that made quite a difference to my schooling. I remember a delightful master called Mr Crow but the other name escapes me.
We used the pond for fishing!
Cricket was a key feature and we had the Burnett brothers in the first team who were grandsons of the great cricketing man,Frank Wooley.
I wonder if any others reading this will have memories of the sixties. When did the school close. ?

Mr Wingfield.
Hi Richard, I just saw your comment. Hope you see this.

My Mother died (January 2015) and I received some interesting momentos of Merrion House. One was the Sports Day Order of Events dated 2nd Of July 1960. A day before my 12th birthday!

Masters are Mr A.G. Crowe, Mr J.B.Hubard and Mr R.W. Wingfield.

Boys mentioned (some bloke called Vardy came second in the Egg n Spoon!) included Richard and Robin Burnett, Gosse, Thomas,Hutchins,Hazelton, Smith, Watson (son of Watson whom the House was named after) Coppard, Bruce Provan Smith and Nunn. A few memories!

You may remember when Mrs B-H died her Sister came to assist at the School. Miss Dorothy (always known as 'Do Do') Strudwick.

My cousin was a refugee from Nazi Germany and lived at Merrion House School, and arrived in 1939. She died on 23.9.1940. I was told during the Blitz. Was there bombing near the school at that time?
