Share your own memories of Selsdon and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I remember Selsdon well as my family lived at 68 Edgecoombe, the long road on the opposite side of the wood at Selsdon not to be confused with Selsdon Woods. We had two ways to get to Selsdon shops. Through the woods opposite our house and exiting at Ingham road the very steep descent into the bottom part of the road up into town. There was a house at the top of the road on the right that had a fine apple ...see more
This photo shows my Dad teaching me, age 5, to ride my little bike right outside our house, No.12, where we lived from 1950 to 1972. Such a lovely quiet road then with just trees and allotments opposite. Not so today.....they have all been replaced by a giant Sainsburys!
My parents had a chicken farm in Selsdon Vale, where I was born in 1948. I lived there until I left home to go travelling and then to university, at the age of 18, in about 1966. This was about the same time that Selsdon Vale was sold for building land, and my parents and younger brother moved to Croydon. Memories....roaming in the bird sanctuary, which was really near, and tobogganing there in the ...see more
My family moved to Selsdon in 1951. I was 4 years old. We lived in Selsdon Vale on our pig farm called Woodley. I went to Selsdon School. It was the happiest time of my life. I so well remember the village as we called it and the Bird Sanctuary where I enjoyed walking the dogs and tobogganing in the snow. The rec was a bit far, but I did go there a few times - on my bike. I spent endless hours ...see more
My father bought the pig farm known as Woodley in Selsdon Vale in 1951. I was four. I attended Selsdon Primary school until I was eleven when I moved to Riddlesdown. I really treasure my childhood memories as I had so much fun. During school holidays I would go out with my dad in his lorry to collect the pigswill from hotels, hospitals, etc. From all the articles I've read about Selsdon no one ever mentions Selsdon Vale. My name then was Lesley Willers. Does anyone remember me?
We moved to Littleheath Road circa 1957, I was a pupil until we moved in 1960. I remember: Colin Smith, Mervyn Allinson (spelling?), Janice Russell, and her friend Judith Hardman, Peter Martin, and that is it as far as full names go. The year I left, I watched the eclipse of the sun, on the top playground. I used to run around a lot, and run into the infants? playground, knocked a little girl down, damaged ...see more
In 1955 I was doing my penultimate year at school. I started at Selsdon primary circa 1944. The air raid siren was out side the school so when it went off we could not miss it! The doodle bug phase of WWII started in June 44 so we often had to evacuate the classroom and march out in orderly fashion, led by our class teacher. It was in the school air raid shelters that I learnt my ABC and 2 x table. Looking ...see more
Hi, I've recently discovered this while doing research on a book I am writing and was interested to hear how many people from Selsdon remember their childhood and, in most cases, enjoyed the village as I knew it as a good place to grow up. I was born in 1948 and lived at 21 ( later changed to 41 ) Ingham Road from then until 1967 when I left for university and never really returned except to visit my Mum who lived in the ...see more
Hi - I have just discovered this site and was interested by memories of Selsdon - particularly from Jaqueline Cook remembering Littleheath Woods! I spent the first eighteen years of my life living in Ingham Road -the other side of the primary school from Foxearth Road - from 1948 - 1966 before I left for university. My parents Les and Chris Munton moved there just before the outbreak of war in 1939. Apart from a short ...see more
I remember all the teachers you name. Mr Worth was my form teacher in my last year here ('71, I think). He prepped us for (and got me through, I'm sure) the 11+ exam by letting us practice on old Progress Papers (logic problems). By the time the exam came around, it was just another fun session of puzzles. Going on to grammar school from that, I can say he played an extended valuable role in my getting a good education - priceless. Gawd Bless Ya, Mr Worth!
