Nostalgic memories of Selsey's local history

Share your own memories of Selsey and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I'd be very interested to hear any memories about the father and son icecream team. They had a wooden icecream cart, which was pushed from Chichester to the beach and back
I remember the Crown Riding Stables very well. My family, the Worboys, lived in Selsey during the 1960s and emigrated to Australia in 1969. Every weekend I would go to the stables to groom the horses and muck out the stables. I was always wary of a horse named Tansy, she was known to give a powerful kick if you stood anywhere near her rear end. After a few attempts I decided that riding the horses was not for me but I still enjoyed being around them.
Hi, does any one else have a photo of a railway carriage that our family used to stay in, I remember it being very close to the beach. My older siblings remember descending a ladder straight onto the beach. The railway carriage used to belong to our aunt and uncle, I went back to Selsey a few years ago, I would dearly love to see any photos of it.
Mr Cootes riding his lovely grey mare Melody. Spent all my spare time there as a young teenager. Favourite horse was Gypsy, which was one of Toby Lee's horses. Can remember most of the horses names as well. Anyone remember Roxy and Malcolm who used to work there before Ann and her mother replaced them?
Does anyone remember Mr and Mrs Chew from the supermarket at the White Horse caravan site, opposite the entrance, and fish and chips. I would like to know what happened to them/any knowledge gratefully recieved. I used to spend my holidays with them and Margaret Avery. We worked in their shop in Guildford for years as kids. They used to spoil us both as they had no children of their own. Mr Chew had a ...see more
I was 10 years old when the picture of Selsey High Street was taken, and I lived in the house on the right hand side with the low wall outside - it was called Glen Roy! I have this picture on my office wall and I am convinced that I am the boy in shorts walking past the shop. I moved from Selsey up the road to Sidlesham in 1965.
I spent many happy holidays at West Sands. The Embassy club - I can still smell the polished floor. I remember two of the singers. One was JIm (Murphy, I think) and another one the following year called Peter. Somewhere I have the photographs of them, taken next to my sister and myself! It also had a little TV room with about 8 chairs where you could watch Crossroads or whatever happened to be on. The ...see more
I spent several holidays in a chalet with long verandah which was one of the first on the right just after a burnt out house and just before the caravans started in Mill Lane during the late 1940s and early 1950s. I remember getting off the bus from Chichester with all our luggage and there were an assortment of men with bicycles with various trailers attached and for a small fee cases and bags were loaded on and all the ...see more
I can remember the shop well, both my grandparants had caravans on Mr Wakley's old site (the first gate on the left past the windmill). If the Greenaways shop (that was an old bus parked by the windmill) was shut it meant walking the extra bit to the caravan shop. I still have a photo taken by Selsey Photographic, Millfield Road (phone SELSEY 2604) of myself aged 13 with a shopping bag walking to the shop taken in ...see more
