More about this scene

On the right hand side, several businesses, including Pedley & White outfitters, occupy the Church House building, erected in the 1530s on the site of old tenements. The ground floor space was occupied by shops while the upper was used for meetings. At the end of the 17th century, the Church House, under the charge of the Almshouse, was divided and became three separate tenements. The three obviously different roofs seen in the photograph show exactly how the separation was made.

Memories of Sherborne, Half Moon Street c1950

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. These memories are of Sherborne, Half Moon Street c.1950

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

The couple on the right pavement are my grandparents George Gray and his wife Elizabeth (nee Phippen) of Thornford. The photo would have been taken on a Thursday because after his retirement they always travelled to Sherborne on the once a week bus and would have been walking back to Digby Road just before midday for the bus home. Date about right as born 1887. He retired 1954/5.
