More about this scene

The vaguely Art Deco style of Shirley House (left) contrasts with the Gothic look of the Baptist church, but Stratford Road today is a much more eclectic mix than it was in the 1960s. This formless architectural jumble is set in the context of one of Birmingham's widest roads. Somehow there is room for several lanes of traffic, cycleways, pedestrian zones and even some planting.

A Selection of Memories from Shirley

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Shirley

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I lived in Shirley (Skelcher Rd) from about 1956 to 1959 and often played in Shirley Park. I remember one time on this roundabout I was set on by a group of older boys who spun me round at high speed. Luckily my grandad and our dog turned up to take me back home for tea and the yobs all ran off. I fell off those swings a good few times too! Happy days.
This image shows Longmore Garage in the foreground. My friend Terry Stokes did his apprenticeship there. I spent many hours hanging out there and helping if I could. We also used their spark plug cleaner for cleaning the spark plugs that got fouled up on our Lambretta scooters. Charlie was the head mechanic, manager and was a master at panel beating and bodywork. I lived in Fir Tree Gardens at top of Bridle Road, in the 60's. I remember walking down Bridle Road to the pond and fishing with our nets and jam jars but can't remember the name of the park the pond was in. Walking to Wickham Road shops at bottom of Bridle Road. Christine Cox
Hand some good discos and jumble sales in hall when I was a child, did tap dancing here and ballet too.
