Where I Came From. By Christine Harris (Formerly Hudson)

A Memory of Shoreham-By-Sea.

I was born at 42 Stanley Avenue Portslade, on 21st July 1944. We moved to Shoreham after the war and Dad ran a small transport cafe, which, last time I visited it was a bookmakers called Sargeant Harris. Next door was a cafe called Grub'n'stuff, where my sister and I used to go for our breakfast when on holiday. Not the classiest of places, but the food was fantastic and very affordable. I think it was GBP2.65 for a full breakfast - bacon, egg, sausages, beans, mushrooms and yummy fried potatoes. With this came toast, butter and a mug of the best tea we'd ever tasted.
We emigrated to Australia in June 1951 on the P&O Strathnaver, and lived on the northern beaches in Sydney for many years. I now live in Beaudesert, Queensland, but England will always be "Home". My sister and I have had several trips back over the years, but now we are retired and on the age pension, it's not possible financially, I'm sad to say. My sister has also recently been diagnosed with mesothelioma, which I am devastated about of course, so even with sufficient funds, flying that far is out of the question.
