Nostalgic memories of Shrewsbury's local history

Share your own memories of Shrewsbury and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

On the maternal side of my ancestry, I knew my maternal grandfather for many years. There was a large leather bound family album which as a child, I was permitted to look at. It was after the "all clear" sounded in the early 1940's. A grand announcement was made that I would now be told something very special. It concerned the father of my grandfather. He was John Halstead Wood, born Shrewsbury 1858. ...see more
My twin sister, Anne, and I were born a month prematurely in July 1950. We were baptised shortly after, in the special ancient font, in St. Mary's. 3 years ago, my 86 year old father & I revisited St. Mary's to see the font and were thrilled to also find the Mothers' Union banner my mother used to carry.
I am trying to find any children or grandchildren of Lesley Charles Hall, whose wife's name was Hilda. He served in the Royal Navy during the war. I believe he had 11 children. He died in 1998. Any information would help no matter how small for the book I am researching. Thank you for your time. John M Taylor

I have happy memories of our time there, playing in the huge garden, the orangery and on my swing. Despite being a historic building and and one time the home of Bishop Walsham How, ...see more
I am researching for a book (The Hallowed Halls of Tottenham) and need information on an Albert Benjamin Hall who died in Shrewsbury during Sept 1998. He played soccer for Tottenham Hotspurs and had remarkable war experiences. Anyone who knew him or was related to him, please get in touch. Thank you, John
From 1950 to 1952 I attended Shrewsbury College as a Agriculture Engineering student, and was boarded at Nearwell Hostel sited on the left of the picture (the tall trees on the left were part of the garden). I believe it has since been replaced by the Library and ambulance Station? At the time I was there the hostel was run by one of the College teachers - a Mr Spurr and his wife.
Stopped here to meet a friend.
My dad was posted from Strensall in Yorkshire to Nescliffe in the beginning of 1959. We took a steam train to Shrewsbury, then a bus to Nescliffe. At night the family of 3, plus cat in a basket, plodded across a field to the married quarters there. It was a hot summer and the Everly Brothers were playing "wake up little Suzy". We had a charabang to Lake Verny - 12 of us. We also went to the ...see more
