Sidcup In The 1960s

A Memory of Sidcup.

I lived in Sidcup asa child up to the age of 11, moving away from the area in 1970. I went to Days Lane Primary School. I don’t remember there being a high street as such but a row of shops I do remember which included a Hairdresser, a newsagent and a small grocer’s as supermarkets used to be called then. I have fond memories of walking past the shops to school and across the way was a long woodland path that led to a park/play area that used to be somewhere we went during the holidays, a kind of play/care to go to during the days to be looked after when parents were at work. They were really happy days for the most part. It was a quiet and small community. It was Kent then too, not South East London as it is now

I was born in Sidcup and lived at 317 Main Road until 1962.My parents carried on there for some years before moving near Nottingham.I was born in 1944 and my Grandfather ran a bakery and general store just off Sidcup Hill
I also went to Days Lane Primary School. I then went on to Blackfen Secondary School for Girls and finally to Bexley Technical School for Girls. I was born in 1942 at 18 Ronaldstone Road, Blackfen, Sidcup, during a blackout. My Mum and Dad were the first owners of No. 18 in 1937. In 1960 I went to Dusseldorf to work and have been here ever since.
With reference to my previous comment I think the woodland you refer to is Holly Oak Wood which I cycled through to go to the library. Possibly the row of shops you refer to are the shops in Blackfen or the row of shops at the corner of Fen Grove and Days Lane. When I lived in Blackfen the newsagent there was Peeks and they also sold sweets.
Yes I think it was the row of shops on the corner of Fen Grove and Days Lane. I have very fond memories of the sweet shop there and I remember there was a hairdressers there too. I think that you are right about Holly Oak Wood and the library too. Those both sound familiar. I left the area at age 11 but remember it very fondly.
I should add that I lived in Caithness Gardens, Number 11.
I was born 1941 and lived in Harborough Ave for 18 years and remember the little row of shops in Days Lane, Holly Oak Wood and the library well. Mr Peeks' wife, or maybe sister, had the newsagents and sweet shop in th Oval. I also went to Days Lane Primary School and then on to Dartford Grammar School on the little 242 bus and then Trollybus to Dartford each day.
Thank you Peter. It sounds like happy memories for you and yes Holly Oak Wood and the library are wonderful memories for me too.
I was born in Shooters Hill in 1962, but lived in Sidcup as a child. We lived at 199 Days Lane, just next door to the Fen Grove shops. I believe the hairdresser was run by a lady called Jean, but I may be mistaken. I went to Days Lane School as well. I think that the headmistress at the time was Mrs. Bottomly, but again I could be mistaken. I used to play with my friend Gary, in the back alley behind Days Lane, that ran off Fen Grove. I now live in Sydney, Australia, but still have fond memories of my childhood.
Yes Mrs Bottomley was the headmistress when I was at Days Line Primary School too. John we must have been there at the same time, although a few years apart as I was born in 1959.
