Childhood

A Memory of Sigingstone.

I grew up in the village and my earliest memory was playing out the back garden of where I lived in Old Barn Cottage. I was brought up with my gran, great- gran and uncle, the family name was Newman. I also used to walk to Llamihangle church every Sunday morning with my nan. I enjoyed many happy times and memories of living here. The sadest memory though that my family have is when the plane crashed in the field next to our cottage and my father and uncles helped with the rescue, this was portrayed many years later by HTV who did a documentary caalled "Shadow across the Sun" which some of my family took part in.

I lived in Siginstone 1951 to around 1960. My name was Pamela Dalton and we lived in Siginstone. I remember the family Newman. Our bungalow was in front of the field where the plane crashed and when we moved in the wing of the plane was up against the side of the garage and it was taken away. I was only 8 when we moved to Siginstone. I had 4 brothers Hugh, Peter, Brian and David. We used to walk to Llanmihangel (I think that’s how it was spelt) to go to the church. We went to the schools in Llantwit Major. I remember there used to be planes flying over and one day the sign that it was attached to the plane came off and pulled the electric wires over the road. We used to have pigs at one time and one used to escape and we would have to go and bring it back. There was a Miss Beale and I used to have music lessons. There was Thomas who had the field in front of our bungalow.
