The Derbyshire Miners' Welfare Holiday Centre, off Winthorpe Avenue, opened in May 1939, a few months before war broke out. Like the nearby Butlin's Holiday Camp, it was a pioneer venture; the miners were determined that their people should be able to enjoy cheap holidays of the same kind.
