More about this scene
Newby Hall was built by Sir Christopher Wren for the MP of Ripon, Sir Edward Blackett, during the 1690s. A hundred years later Robert Adam was commissioned to alter and redecorate the house as we see today. The statue of the horseman has an intriguing history. Originally it was modelled on the King of Poland, but when the bill for it was not paid, Sir Thomas Vyner brought it to England in 1675. It was then re-carved as a portrait of Charles II, and was erected in London before going to Lincolnshire in 1779. It has been here at Newby Hall since 1883.
