More about this scene
Slapton was one of the villages evacuated during the war. Villagers were given only a few days to pack up their belongings and move away. Many buildings were damaged during the exercises but now, happily, show few scars. An obelisk, a gift from the United States Army, can be seen on the nearby sands, its plaque thanking the villagers for their sacrifice.
