More about this scene

In medieval times, Snaith was an important trading town - its market charter was granted in 1223. The earliest of Snaith's three manors existed in 1086, and for most of its early life was owned by the Crown. In 1852 Queen Victoria sold it to the 7th Viscount Downe, whose name is commemorated in the central hotel, The Downe Arms. The manor house is just out of sight on this side of The Black Lion, and is now a chemist's shop.
