More about this scene
From the church gate we look down Churchgate Street. On the right is the Crown Hotel, managed by William Manning. Opposite is the Fountain Inn, partly burnt down in 1900, but still containing the Justices' Room and fireplace of 1583. Children play in the street, and women cycle with groceries on their handlebars.
