More about this scene
At the entrance to the Norman church is a notice that reads: 'Enter this door as if the floor within were gold/ And every wall of jewels, of wealth untold./ As if a choir/ In robes of fire/ Were saying here/ Nor shout, not rush/ But hush/ For God is here.' Another curiosity is found close by on the road to Cirencester, where a stone building in the shape of a chess rook can be seen. This folly was built by a Dutchman in the 18th century. Why? Nobody knows.
