An Everlasting Love Of Books

A Memory of South Ockendon.

It might seem strange and archaic to write in glowing terms about a public library on a council estate, but that's what I'm happily doing. To me as a kid, this place was like a wonderland, and I used to sit and read, and then leave with a huge armful of books on things as diverse as all the 'Just William' books, SF, How To Fly a Plane, almost anything really.
It was a marvellous resource to a penniless kid and I always look at pictures of it with affection. I've never stopped enjoying reading, and it's partly due to this library and its open arms.

I remember Belhus Library as well, I absolutely loved it there, nothing could beat going there after school or, when I was working on a Saturday and coming home with as many books as I was allowed, I have never lost my love of reading.
I remember when the library was a large wooden shed type building,it was in front and just to the right of the present library.I too was an avid reader and loved going there, even with all the digital technology that we have now you still cant beat a good book..I lived in Annalee Gdns,we moved there in 1954 from Plaistow.
