Rashies
A Memory of South Park of Bradieston.
I chose Rashies as the title because South Park of Bradieston was known locally as Rashies.
I was born in the farm house of South Park of Bradieston on 7th Sept 1944.I am the middle one of 5 children of James and Ethel Peters.4 of us were born on the farm ,and my younger brother born in Charlton maternity home Montrose. My older brother is 89 and all 5 of us still living.
My father kept mainly beef cattle ,he had no hill land ,so no sheep. We had 2 cows in order to provide milk for the family,he had arable fields.I don't remember horses on the farm but there were harnesses in what would have been the stables. He had a small Massey Fergusson tractor. My mother kept a lot of poultry and bred geese.
My mother had been brought up on a neighbouring farm, South Bradieston and my father was an Aberdonian, his father had a dairy in Aberdeen.
My maternal grandparents moved from South to East Bradieston ,and my cousin still farms in East Bradieston.
As children we attended Garvock school then the secondary school in Laurencekirk, school bus picked us up at Garvock crossroad. We went to Garvock Kirk and Sunday school. Both Garvock kirk and school have been closed for decades,
The farm house was updated in ? early 50's.Prior to that,we had gas mantle and Tilley lamps as there was no electricity. We also had an outside toilet until the update.
As children we would cycle to St,Cyrus beach approximately 3 miles away.We had no holidays which was normal in the farming community.
