More about this scene

The Common dates back to medieval times. It was purchased by the town from the manor of Shirley in 1228 for ten silver marks - quite a bargain! Today, no other city in England has such a large area of public common, and within its boundaries more than 350 species of flowering plants and over 100 species of birds have been identified. The rambling building at the centre of the photograph is The Cowheards pub.

Fishing At The Ornimental Pond Southampton Common
From the age of about 5 (I'm now 69) I use to fish this lake for tench, carp and roach. Then in the winter of 62/63 I would ice skate on it from Boxing Day 62 to march 63 - what a winter that was. Now in New Zealand for that last 35 years course angling here is not the same. However, the trout fishing is outstanding..

Southampton Zoo
I recall the zoo at the common. It was run if I recall by Mary Chipperfield. We use to climb up the oak trees and peer in for free.

i remember being taken to the zoo on the common many times as a kid. it was very small and probably not a nice place for some of the animals to live. i particularly remember watching the big cats pacing up an down in their cages as we looked on. even as a kid of about 8 (1972) i could see they were in distress. there was a kids area where behind a low wall you could lean over and pet rabbits and guinea pigs as ...see more

However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
