Boscombe was built across a wooded chine (a wide ravine) that led down to the sea; these features are common along this coast. Since this photograph was taken, many of the quieter strolls have been formalised into pretty flower-filled gardens, where tourists and locals alike can sit and contemplate on pleasant days.
