Nostalgic memories of Southgate's local history

Share your own memories of Southgate and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

The Odeon cinema in Southgate was one of our favourite places on a Saturday evening, also The Capitol and the Gaumont, and we saw some good films. These were our 'lifeline' as we didn't have a tv. I also remember the Royalty Ballroom which was another good place to spend a Saturday evening. Happy Days!
I remember Ye Olde Cherry Tree inn and having a Babycham in the 50's. We really thought that was living! The pub was always buzzing and was a great place to meet up with friends on a Saturday night.

I was born in Winchmore Hill in 1937 and from a very young age lived with my parents and younger sister Carole in Wynchgate, backing onto to the lovely Grovelands Park. When I got married in 1957 our reception for 80 friends and relatives for a sit down meal was held at Ye Olde Cherry Tree, and I remember it all went very well My father kept the receipt for this, which I still have in my possession.
in 1955 I attended Oakwood school in chase road
I have some great memories of the Royalty Ballroom at Southgate, just wondering if anyone else remembers this great place or any photo's
In 1985 my son, daughter, niece & nephew were in the 7 to 10 age bracket. Included in their favourite places were the Broomfield Park kids' playground, the kids' assault course and the kids' boating pond. On various occasions we made Sunday afternoon, family picnic trips to the park to take in these places. We adults - me, my wife, my sister, my brother in law, ...see more
In 1952 I was 8 years old and I lived at Bush Hill Park, Enfield. During my childhood my favourite park in the area was Broomfield, the particular attraction being the museum in Broomfield House. I vividly remember the indoor beehive with the long transparent tube linking it to outside to allow the bees to come and go, a penny farthing bicycle secured to the bannisters of the staircase so ...see more
I lived on Whitehouse Way from 1960-65 and attended Enfield College of Technology. My regular pub was the Cherry Tree and I used to take the young Sunday school teacher there for a drink after matins until the deacon found out. What I didn't know then is that my family had lived in Southgate and area for at least 3 hundred years. My g.g.grandfather (1810-1854) was the blacksmith at Chase Side. ...see more
I lived in Oakwood in the 50s as a child and would regularly be in Oakwood park all day on a Saturday. Quick return home for lunch in between playing on the swings, fishing nets at the wild pond, buying a packet of crisps with a twisty blue salt bag at the cafe. The boating lake on a Sunday would be covered in toy yachts one of which my brothers and would frequently get marooned out in the middle. In the ...see more
