More about this scene
The Marine Lake covered what had been fifty acres of wet sand, which was one of the favourite haunts of sand yacht enthusiasts. Sand yachts were large four-wheeled vehicles mounting a yacht rig and capable of tearing up and down the beach at high speed. They were banned for a time after one of them collided with a bathing machine. As can be seen from the picture, the area between the lake and the Promenade was developed to provide the front with additional gardens.
