Southport, The Pier 1908

More about this scene
This picture gives us a good view of Marine Drive, built in 1894 as the sea retreated. The Drive created a large area of water around the pier, which was known locally as the Lagoon. Drainage was provided, but it proved inadequate after a very high tide, with the result that the water found its own way back to the sea by scouring out a deep channel under some of the pier supports and causing a partial collapse.
