The bypass on the south side of town was opened in 1926; it was much needed to relieve the narrow streets of both local china clay and through traffic. It still carries a large volume of traffic, although all is quiet here – we are looking down Penwinnick Road. The white block of the 1930s Odeon cinema dominates the town centre in the background (centre left).
