More about this scene

There are no identifiable remains of the castle built here in the 12th and 13th centuries. St Donat's was rebuilt by Sir William Stradling during the reign of Edward III and remodelled during the Tudor period. The castle is divided into two wards, the outer being defended by a gatehouse with a portcullis. This picture shows the approach to the gatehouse by way of a bridge over the dry ditch defence.
