Cycle Racing Llandudno Road Rumney.

A Memory of St Mellons.

I moved to Llandudno Road Rumney from Comet Street Adamstown in 1953.I can recollect cycle or light motor cycle racing on a track wheer the flats are now.As a young lad with my school friends we used to walk up Greenway Road which was a long lane adjacent to Llandudno Road leading up to Newport Road where the Fox and Hounds iis before Trowbridge was built.Near Farmer Jones farm was a cottage with stable doors where we used to watch the old cobbler sitting crossed legged on a bench at the rear of the cottage making boots and shoes, that lovely smell of leather has stayed with me for years.Sadly the cottage was demolished in the late 50s or early 60s..I attended all the schools in Rumney starting with the infants in Wentloog Road and then the juniors, strange as it may seem we used to have air raid drills in both schools From there to Greenway Road junior school and then onto the new Caer Castel school on Newport Road..there was another entrance around the corner in Manobier Crescent where the bike sheds were..After school I used to cycle to Lloyds newsagent on Newport Road opposite the Carpenters Arms and carry out my paper round, which covered a lot of the old farms which are no longer there, finishing at Earlswood Farm Greenway Road where I think it was farmer Earlswood used to sit and wait on the porch at the end of the dirt track to his farm house for his echo, sadly it is now a club

..All for nine shillings a week.
