St. Neot's, 1956 1961.

A Memory of St Neots.

St. Neot's changed my life! Beginning an apprenticeship at a long gone Huntingdon firm I was obliged to attend the then new St. Neot's Technical College one day a week. The head was the late Louie Mountford. We 'part time' students didn't get our lunch at the tech so either brought a packed lunch or went into town, in my case to Wren's fish and chip shop in the high street. Near the bridge was another favourite place, Irene's café - and it's juke box that cost 6d to hear Jim Reeves or Doris Day etc. After the summer holiday in 1958 a new, young female full time student arrived from Huntingdon - blonde with a lush ponytail. There was no one else for me. It was difficult overcoming her determination to avoid being distracted from her work but I won - it took seventeen months. She and I married in 1964 and have lived in Bournemouth for many years now but have never forgotten that wonderful place and it's great staff, remaining in touch to this day with some of the friends we made there.

Although the tech has changed now, last time we visited we were pleased to see the chip shop remains.
