More about this scene
Prominent lighthouses mark this harbour entrance, whilst an incoming tide ripples the surrounding water, causing the fishing craft ride to surge gently. Clothes are drying sluggishly behind the figures on the right-hand jetty. Just eleven years later the railway came to Whitby, altering trading patterns completely. The piers were also extended, offering greater protection against the prevailing winds that make this another dangerous harbour entrance.
