This is the monument to William Cecil, Lord Burghley, builder of Burghley House and perhaps the most famous member of the Cecil family. He died in 1598 at the age of 78, and his elaborate tomb stands close to the altar. On the left is the monument to Richard and Jayne Cecil, his parents.
