More about this scene
In the era of the stage coach, the George Hotel was classed as the best hotel on the Great North Road, and it is still one of the best in the area. The car park is still on the left, and the gallows sign is still over the road. Between the sign and St Mary's Church is the Town Bridge over the river Welland. Even the steps and the handrail are still in situ, but the shop window on the right has gone.
