My adopted uncle Artthur and Auntie Eadie used to be the caretakers here .My sisters and myself used to spend our summer holidays here. It had a beautiful old raspberry tree and and a babbling brook - I still can never get enough of fresh raspberries. My grandmother Doris Palmer, lived in Craft Cottage which is right next to the pump. We spent all our family holidays there during the 50's and 60's. Granny was a war widow and she worked in Adams tobacconist, which was on the corner of Church Street. She had a whippet called Jimmy and there was a lodger called Mr Herbert, who worked at the butchers in the High Street. A treat was to go and watch him make sausages. ...see more
My memory of Steyning is staying at my aunt Ada's in Priory Field, walking the back lane from her house and going to a big church, and also going to the auction mart and smelling all the animals. I still relish those days.
