More about this scene
Though not a castle, the Abbey was chosen by Bruce as a depot for his stores and reserves of ammunition prior to the Battle of Bannockburn. The Abbey was held for Bruce by Sir John Airth, but during the hours of darkness on the night of 22/23 June 1314 it was raided by the Earl of Atholl, a supporter of Edward II. Sir John's command was wiped out, giving the English king a victory of sorts.
