Undoubtedly this is one of the most romantic medieval sites in all of England. Dating from the end of the 13th century, technically it is not a castle at all, but a moated manor house, and it would have been very open to attack. Knowing this, the occupants during the Civil War wisely abandoned the castle, so that only its walls and original gatehouse were then demolished.
