More about this scene
Another mystery regarding Stonehenge is that many of the stones have been dressed - again there is no precedent for such work in Britain prior to Stonehenge. The lintels to the right of the picture have been shaped, with mortises beaten into the stone; the upright stone to the centre right has been vertically tapered to avoid optical distortion. The smaller standing stones in the middle of the circle are the famous Blue Stones and come from the Preseli Mountains in west Wales.
