A few years after this photograph was taken the public were denied access to the circle. Visitors' wear and tear was damaging the site. So too were aspects of the 'alternative society', who used Stonehenge for all sorts of spiritual enlightenment or protest, as can be seen by the CND sign daubed on the stone in the centre. Nowadays, the public can view the stones from a perimeter path.
