Strathpeffer, Highland Girls Wringing The Washing c.1890

More about this scene

The town of Strathpeffer owes its popularity to the discovery of sulphurous springs in the 18th century. These were declared by medical practitioners in the Victorian era to be the most curative in Britain. The village rapidly grew into a popular spa town, with visitors flocking from all over Europe to sample its sulphur and chalybeate springs. It was served by a branch line of the Highland Railway from Fodderty Junction. Are these girls laundresses at one of the hotels?
