My Memories When I Was Young In Stroud 1950s

A Memory of Stroud.

It was amazing to look back at some of these photos..remembering them well. We as a family lived at 35 stratford road which was then a council house owned by the fire brigade, father worked in the fire station which was then in cainscross road. Mother worked at the lido in Stratford park in the basket room, where us siblings use to get into the lido free on a daily basis exciting times. Our family name was Pegler, david my eldest brother, christhoper, and myself marilynn, I went to the black boy infants school, church road which was part of rodborough school then went onto rodborough. I can remember the two picture houses we had in stroud, woolworths where I use to pop in and get one penny worth of broken biscuits after school lol. The policeman on the cross diverting the traffic, aunt mcarthers tea room a little way along from the cross where mum use to take me if I was good. Bate mans a child's paradise in those days, and of course as I grew older the subscription rooms for a dance, where on a Friday the teddy boys use to come over from gloucester on the railcar the things you remember. Happy days, stroud in that time was lovely, in one of the pictures there is a shoe shop on the cross which mum brought me my first pair of slip on shoes much disgust from my dad, first time I wore them one fell off in the middle of the road and a bus went over it, tore it to sheds, I can see now how dad was right I was about 11 yrs old. Peckham the photographer Chris and I sat for a photo session I still have the photos now after all these yrs. my dad's family lived in stroud, granny was a catholic regularly used the St. Peter's church. Fathers brothers one was a engine driver Charles pegler the other two Tom ang jim were firemen too. My uncle son owned the forge in the town sonny kill minster I was very fond of him. All passed on now sadly. Now I am 74 living in gloucester since I was 12. But these photos have brought flooding back wonderful memories thank you very much indeed for sharing them with us.
