Re Childrens Home

A Memory of Stroud.

My dad Roy Taylor was at a childrens' home. He never knew whether it was called Rodbrough or Roxborough House either. He would have been there in the 1950s. He often mentions The Black Boys School which was as it was known and was nearby. I will ask him what else he remembers.

I was there from 1952 to 1956 with my brother and 3 sisters. It was Roxburgh House. We had a cruel nurse Wedley who I believe was sacked later because she was so spiteful to the children. The play room had a long table with benches on either side. A lady spent most of her day in here darning socks and sewing repairs. Boys and girls slept in separate dormitories. I went to Castle street infants school for a short time and then with my brother to ChurchStreet boys school where the headmaster was Mr Jones. Beetroot and cheese was a common tea time meal and bread and dripping for supper. I don’t remember any Christmas celebrations or birthday parties. The scullery on the right hand side as we entered the home was for strip washing every day and also the shoe cleaning rota for cleaning the hard leather boots that we wore. Something like 24 pairs of shoes were cleaned on the rota; one child polishing, a second child shining and a third child storing the boots on the shelves.
