Stubbington 1955 1960
A Memory of Stubbington.
I arrived accompanied by my father in 1955 not really knowing what to expect as I had been born and brought up in Jersey, which in those days was rather different to the mainland. My father, uncle and grandfather had all been to Stubbington and had told me tales of 'Monty' Foster who apparently had a fearsome reputation for strictness.
My number was 22 and I still have my original school tie and the old boys tie. Having been pried out of a fairly comfortable (spoilt) life, it was a hell of an awakening to find a life of being ordered around and having to do things for yourself, but quickly adapted (no choice in the matter!). I do remember some of the teachers, Mr Bawtree and of course the 'Sarge' who ran the tuck shop and the rifle range using .22 BSA Martini rifles, I believe that at one time the winner of the shooting competition for the year was taken out to shoot rooks in the grounds - imagine that happening today! I left in 1960 and went on to Hurn Court school In Dorset, having failed the 'Common Entrance'.
Many people today run down the thought of boarding schools, but I firmly believe that they teach a young man to stand on his own two feet, although I must say I did look forward to the Sundays during term when parents were allowed to visit and take you out for a decent meal. All in all I had a good time and made many friends which I have sadly lost contact with, so if anyone remembers me do drop in a post on this site.
