A House Fire Along The Redditch Road ?

A Memory of Studley.

At the time I lived at 45 Crooks Lane, I must have been about 12 or 13 living with my parents Fred and Sis, approx. 1951 or 1952, when my Dad told me that a rather strange man who lived in a large detached house along the Redditch Road, had a painting that he wanted to dispose of and would I take a wheelbarrow down to the house and collect it. I was very wary of this because of the tales that the house was overgrown with bushes and every room was filled to the brim with newspapers. I did however go and fair enough, when I had pushed a way through the undergrowth, there waiting for me was an oil painting of a race horse. This I then took home. The very next morning we found out that the previous night the old man had doused the house with petrol and set fire to it.Apparently the rumours about the newspapers were true. Nothing remained of the house except a few blackened beams and the old man had perished in the fire.I still have the painting but I cannot remember the old mans name!

Does anyone remember this fire or the name of the old man? If so I can be contacted on 01527 821582
Kind regards,Bob Chambers.
