More about this scene
This was the latest of many wooden bridges to span the River Stour at this point on the main route from Essex (right) into Suffolk. This bridge dates from 1805, and was eventually replaced by one of reinforced concrete in 1911. The medieval hospital of St John stood to the left on the Sudbury side of the bridge.
