Sunbury From The 1950s Through 1960s
A Memory of Sunbury.
Our family moved to the Berg Estate, 4 Silverdale Drive, in 1954. I was born in 1946 and born in Bournemouth and came to Sunbury via Langley. My father worked for BOAC at that time. My first school was Nursery Road where I stayed until I graduated to Kenyngton Manor Secondary School. Mr Robertson was the Headmaster. I used to walk to Nursery Road along Manor Lane and Green Street. Attending Kenyngton Manor first I went by bus, the 237, and then I was allowed to cycle. GAFLAC was our sports field which meant you were more than half way home on sports afternoons.
I was a member of 1st Sunbury cubs and scouts. We met at the old school building in School Walk. I remember many happy hours playing on the building site of the Berg estate. In the summer it was Rivermead Island and the swimming pool. I left Sunbury in 1964 when I joined the RAF and just making occasional visits to visit my parents who actually moved away in 1970. I seem to remember the early Berg estate inhabitants were mainly BOAC or BEA employees. My memories by Bryan Bell
