Regent Cafe & Ice Cream Parlour

A Memory of Sutton.

I was a projectionist at the "CURZON" cinema in Cheam Road form 1962 - 1986 and would always go to the Regent for lunch..Was always a good meal and you could get 3 courses for around 2/6d..
Served by two lovely waitresses Eve & Day..who incidentally came to my 21st Birthday party!
Toni was aided by his wife, son and daughter
He always looked miserable, but in fact was a very jolly and happy person when you spoke to him
Like so much of the old Sutton, his is a much missed shop
To days Sutton is awful and should be avoided as much as possible..Back in the day it was such a great, safe town for shopping and entertainment unlike today

Hi Barrie. Remember the CURZON well, I done my apprenticeship with a company called TANJON it was on the other side of road, and we looked straight onto it, Always remember the black X reinforcing bars supporting it.
What I'm after is a photo of a house (now gone) called Danesboro in SuttonPark Road
Maybe you won't recall it, but someone might
It was a Doctors surgery, there were 3 of then, Drs Williams. Tindall and Del a Monte
I lived there ,my mum was the receptionist
Good old days gone, as you say leave Sutton alone now
I was an apprentice at Tanjon, I started in 1964 and stayed for 13 years. I grew up in Sutton, lots of memories. Perhaps we need to chat!

Whilst contemplating my navel here in hospital I suddenly remembered Regent Ice-cream parlour in Sutton High Street, sadly no longer there and i thought...

Does anyone know relatives of Toni Capaldi the owner, who may be convinced to give up the recipe for his amazing and unparalleled tasting ice-cream?
If anyone knows anything, apart from the 'hypocriphal' stories of gold top and butter mixed in a tin bath, why not start a GoFundMe page to raise a huge amount of cash to buy the recipe and setup a place in Sutton somewhere, maybe on the green at the bottom of town?

Good idea or what?
Get your thinking caps on.....
So Allan, you remember Mr Mocock then?
The Regent was where I bought my first ice cream after the war - a tuppenny wafer served , of course, by Toni. His ice cream was then my gold standard. Most lunch times getting one coming from Sutton Grammar. In the winter, a quick run up to M&S for a pint of hot Ribena and a Cheesecake. Herringtons just over there where I used to haunt for army cap badges. Ghinns, just down the High a little way was where my Mum used to buy her knitting supplies. After school I used to catch the 156 to Cheam outside Timothy Whites. I remember one afternoon arriving there a bit late just as the bus was pulling away, so I thought I could catch it at the next stop near M&S, so I ran, but it didn't stop. Keep going - it's bound to stop at the next one. And so it went, all the way to the top of the high where it turned right to the stop across from the Curzon. I came around the corner just as the last few passengers were boarding. I put on a spurt just as it started to move. I threw my satchel on the platform and managed to get one foot on and grabbed the handrail, with my other foot dragging. I eventually hauled myself onboard and knelt on the platform unable to do anything else for a bit. There was an interested passenger in the first seat just staring at me the whole time - no offer to assist and probably thinking What an idiot - there is always another bus. I will be returning to the area in September, along with one of my grandsons, just to show him where I grew up. Fabulous memories.
