Reme Army Unit Oldfields Road

A Memory of Sutton.

I was born at St. Helier hospital and lived in Stayton Road until I married in 1974. Our house backed on to the Pylbrook and the Oldfields Trading Estate, owned by the Wheeler family. One of the older boys kept a puma in a flat there and would take it for walks, on a lead, past our house. Families in Stayton Road were: Hardy; Dowse; Summerton (us);Gregory; Belt; Pooley; Fisher;Rollason; Stammers; Watson; Parlour; Rand; Hale; Carter; Saxby. Billy Parlour went on to be a member of the AJaes, a local band that did well. I wonder where they all are now??
I remember the REME unit barracks and the Sunday morning parades and can even hum the tune they played on the bugles!
I went to Glastonbury school, Infants and Juniors, then Sutton Common Secondary. I went on to work at Eagle Star for some years. I live in Dorset now and would never return to live in Sutton but I have fond memories especially my teenage years! My Dad and his family were all Sutton born and bred and lived in Orchard Road, Sydney Road and Beauchamp Road at various times.
