More about this scene
The seaside end of the Isle of Purbeck branch railway arrived in Swanage from Wareham in 1885. Swanage Station and Station Road (centre right) can be seen beyond the Rectory (bottom right), the home of Rev Thomas Alfred Gurney, which is now Swanwic House. The view is north- eastwards from the tower of St Mary's Church to the double sidings of the goods yard (centre) and site of James Panton's Swanage Brewery which was demolished in 1893. Ballard Down (top left) and the Victorian villas of Gilbert Road (middle distance) form the backdrop.
