Dr. Payling (Not Sure About The Spelling)

A Memory of Swanwick.

Does anyone remember the headmaster in the late 40's, Doctor Payling? What happened to him? He quit before 1950 I believe. Gordon C Head

Dr Leonard W H Payling left Swanwick to take up the headship of Kingsbury Grammar School in Middlesex. He then joined the London County Council inspectorate in 1954, becoming staff inspector two years later. He rose to Chief Inspector in the Inner London Education Authority from 1963 to 1972. He carried out early studies of the developing comprehensive schools in London, and was joint author of "London Comprehensive Schools 1966" which contained one of the first curriculum analyses of the large secondary school. He played a major part in the preparation of the substantial bodies of evidence from the I.L.E.A. to the Newsam, Plowden and James committees, and served on various national bodies. Dr Payling, whose wife Florence died in 1965, died on January 1 1986, aged 76, survived by his two sons and daughter.
